What is the x-height in typography?

X-height is the height of lowercase letters (like “x”) in a typeface.

  • Taller x-heights = better legibility at small sizes.

  • Shorter x-heights = more elegant but can be harder to read.

Choose typefaces with a generous x-height for mobile and UI use.
