Why color matters

Color is a key part of UI design. It helps establish a visual hierarchy by guiding users' attention, shapes the overall aesthetic of a product, and can convey different emotions. Color should also guide and inform users while supporting accessibility. Together, these qualities contribute to a better user experience.

Common mistakes designers make while using color

One of the most common mistakes in UI design is using too many colors. An interface with an excessive number of colors can feel overwhelming and confusing, making it harder for users to identify the most important elements.

Another common mistake is combining colors that clash. Colors that do not work well together can create a jarring visual effect, distract users, and make it more difficult to focus on the content. For example, a bright green background paired with red text can produce an unpleasant viewing experience.

Poor color choices can reduce the effectiveness of a design in several ways. They can make navigation more difficult, create confusion or frustration, and communicate the wrong message. Designers therefore need to understand how color influences perception and use it deliberately to create interfaces that are both visually appealing and effective at communicating their intended message.

How we perceive color

Color is the visual sensation that occurs when light reflects off an object and enters the human eye. The color we perceive depends on the wavelengths of light that an object reflects or absorbs. Reflected wavelengths determine the color we see, while absorbed wavelengths are not visible.

A red apple, for example, appears red because it reflects red wavelengths of light while absorbing other colors such as blue and green.

Humans perceive color through the combined work of the eyes and the brain. Vision is necessary for color perception, but the amount of available light also matters. A person may be able to see in dim light without distinguishing colors, while colors become visible when more light is present.

Color perception also varies between individuals. Two people observing the same object under identical conditions may not perceive exactly the same color. One person might describe it as red, while another might see it as orange. This means that color perception depends on vision, lighting conditions, and individual interpretation.

The science behind color

Understanding color involves physics, physiology, and psychology.

One difference between color perception and sound perception illustrates how our senses work. When beams of differently colored light, such as red and yellow, are projected together onto a white surface in equal amounts, the eye perceives a single color, in this case, orange. The resulting signal sent to the brain can be the same as the signal produced by a single beam of orange light.

Sound behaves differently. When two musical tones are played at the same time, the individual tones can still be distinguished. A combination of tones does not produce the same perception as a single tone.

Learning about color from the perspectives of physics, physiology, and psychology can deepen your understanding of how color works. While it is not necessary to study these subjects in great depth for UI and UX design, understanding the science behind color can help designers make more informed decisions and create visually engaging, effective interfaces.

The influence of color on interfaces

Color can guide attention, communicate emotion, and establish the overall tone of an interface. Different colors can evoke different emotional responses, including calmness, excitement, trust, and hunger.

For example, social media platforms such as Facebook, X, and LinkedIn all use blue as their primary color, which has been shown to evoke a sense of trust and reliability. Snapchat, on the other hand, uses a combination of yellow and white to evoke feelings of excitement and playfulness.

Bringing it all together

Understanding the basics of color, the way people perceive it, the science behind it, and its influence on interfaces provides a foundation for making better design decisions. Designers should use color deliberately, taking into account the emotions and associations different colors can evoke, while creating interfaces that are visually appealing, memorable, and effective at communicating their intended message.
