Peak-End Rule in UX: Why Users Remember the Best and Last Moments

Most people think they remember an experience as one long, balanced timeline. They usually can't. The Peak-End Rule says we judge an experience mostly by its most intense moment and by how it ends, not by the average of the entire experience. That’s why one amazing moment can make a product feel great, and one annoying ending can ruin the user experience.

Why it matters in UX

For digital products, the peak-end rule is a huge deal. Users don’t walk away remembering every tap, click, or scroll equally. They remember the emotional spikes. These spikes can be positive, like finishing a lesson and getting a satisfying reward, or negative, like hitting a confusing menu or a dead-end error screen. The Decision Lab describes this as a kind of “snapshot” memory model.

What good design looks like here

This is why products that feel memorable often do small things really well at the right moment. Laws of UX highlights how Mailchimp adds illustration, humor, and personality to a high-stress confirmation moment instead of showing a cold, boring modal. The practical move is pretty simple: map the journey, find the moments that already matter, and optimize those experiences. Focus on "peak" moments, making endings memorable, and then testing and iterating to see if those changes actually improve the experience.
