Gestalt Principles in UI/UX Design

Gestalt principles in UI/UX design are basically rules that explain how we perceive things like patterns and groups of similar elements. They help us simplify what we see when we look at objects. Designers use these principles to organize the content on a page so that it's easier to understand.

If you've ever landed on a website and immediately knew what was going on, the layout was probably using Gestalt principles, even if it was unintentional. Our brains don't take the time to carefully think through every single piece; they're always trying to make sense of things quickly.

The 7 key Gestalt principles in UI/UX design and what they’re good for

Closure

We prefer complete shapes, so we mentally fill gaps to perceive a whole image.

Design takeaway: partial shapes, dots, or lines can still be read as a complete icon or mark.

Common region

Elements inside the same closed area are perceived as one group.

Design takeaway: cards, panels, and bounded sections clarify what belongs together.

Continuity (continuation)

We follow paths, lines, and curves and prefer continuous flows, even if something interrupts the line.

Design takeaway: alignment can quietly guide attention through a layout.

Proximity

Items that are close together feel related; items spaced apart feel separate.

Design takeaway: spacing is one of the fastest ways to show relationships.

Figure-ground

We identify a foreground figure against a background and prefer stable interpretations.

Design takeaway: use contrast (like light text on a dark background) to keep key content clear.

Similarity

When elements share visual characteristics, we perceive them as grouped.

Design takeaway: consistent styling helps users predict what’s related (and what’s interactive).

Focal point

Elements that stand out visually attract the most attention.

Design takeaway: use it to draw the user's eye to the call-to-action button.

Final thoughts

Gestalt principles aren’t “design tricks.” They’re a description of how people already perceive the world. And they're a reminder that clarity often comes down to intentional grouping, strong patterns, and thoughtful simplification.
